Sony Ericsson MBW-100

This latest high-tech watch is subtle, simple, and solves a major cell-phone problem. That's why it's so sad that Sony Ericsson's MBW-100 will remain a curiosity for most Americans because it's too expensive ($399) and works with only a few phones.

The MBW-100 (made by Fossil, but with Sony Ericsson branding) is a handsome, if chunky, analog watch first and foremost. You have to like big watches to like this sucker, but it has a classy, professional look if attached to an equally manly wrist.

The phone comes in one size, macho. So if you're a scrawny little wimp like me, you'll need to get a jeweler to remove a few links from the band. Below the analog hands (minute and hour only, no second hand) is a one-line, 96- by 16-pixel OLED display. The watch hooks up to Sony Ericsson phones via Bluetooth. (A client for Symbian Series 60 phones such as the Nokia N80 is also coming, according to Fossil.) All you have to do is press a few buttons and the gadget auto-pairs.

Once it's paired, when you get phone calls, the watch vibrates gently and caller ID information (number and, if the caller is in your phone book, name) pops up on the display. If you don't want to take the call, you can mute your phone's ringer or send a busy signal by pressing the watch's top button. When you get an SMS, the watch vibrates and a little envelope pops up on the screen, but no sender information.
