Navigating in a real 3D environment

UK based media processor manufacturer 3DLabs demonstrated the capabilities of their product using TeleAtlas maps and in a 3D modeled version of Paris. Shown at 3GSM World Conference in Barcelona, 3DLabs’ product differs from others such that it provides a real 3D experience as opposed to what you get on most GPS systems where they actually ’tilt’ a 2D map to create a false view of 3D flyover.

3DLabs does not intend for this technology to be used in only personal navigation devices but also make them available for digital audio players.

The first devices to utilize such real 3D navigation interface designed by 3DLabs should be out in the near future. 3DLabs does not plan to sell their own sat nav device so we may have to wait a few more months to find out which companies will be rolling their products with the new technology.
